Problem

In 2016, Steve Luke, a master craft brewer and local legend, gathered his best brewers to create a space where experimentation and authenticity are paramount: Cloudburst Brewing Co. In 2018, Cloudburst was in need of an updated brand.

Concept

Cloudburst Brewing is a local brewery and tasting room in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood. Each distinct batch of beer and cider is available in limited quantities only once, offering unpredictable flavors and a one-of-a-kind experience. We created a brand to match Cloudburst’s unconventional, experimental, and authentic identity.

Solution

The new Cloudburst identity is electric– jumping with life and energy that is colorful, bold, and constantly evolving. Inspired by Steve’s creative beer-naming, we injected that humor into the rest of the Cloudburst brand. We drew inspiration from the grunge and tattoo culture that is uniquely Seattle, and the new brand is a modern spin on that nostalgia. Hand-done line illustrations, blocky, layered type, and irreverent imagery mirror the authenticity and human touch that is Steve’s brewing philosophy. We chose an accompanying limited color palette with shockingly bold flavor.

Process

Julia and I began by researching the Cloudburst Brewery history, visiting the space, taking photographs, and interviewing employees. We completed an audit of competitive breweries operating in Seattle. We then developed a new and exciting brand strategy to forge an image of Cloudburst Brewing Co. that parallels their existing reputation and is as excellent as the product they produce.

Reflection + Moving Forward

This project was a great practice in how to salvage a project when it goes sideways. Julia and I definitely had major creative differences and visions, but we were able to work together to create a strong brand regardless, and retain a sense of humor and maintain our friendship. It taught me that I am capable of working in several styles of branding and design. In this case, the brand was conservative and clean, but also bright, energetic, and fun. I consider this project a success.
